The pedals and the seeds are present at the same instant, symbolizing how one’s labor’s results can be immediately visible. It is the ideal state that I long to be in. Yet, “Nayuta” in Buddhism refers to the furthest distance possible between two objects. In its ultimate fall, the whale’s legacy lives on in the small fish his body supports; his pain inspires hope. Two ancient Chinese poets I admire, Li Bai and Du Fu, however, shared such a friendship. The phoenix, which, in Confucious philosophy, symbolizes sacrificing your life for society’s betterment, represents Du Fu. The hawk symbolizes the Tao philosophy that promotes the freedom and betterment of self – a perfect representation of Li Bai. I find more resemblance between myself and Li Bai; hence the hawk is drawn realistically. Here in this painting, each picklingjar stands for for one year of my life. However, unlike the narrator, who reserves an empty jar for the future, I want to break the jar altogether and replace it with a splash of water. I want total freedom and possibility. The label on the splash of water is falling off, its strings broken. The emotions of a fifteen-year-old burst forth in a cascade of emojis. The standardized faces smiled back at me, telling me that experiences are all universal. Lu Xun, a critical writer in 20th century China, loves portraying Lunatics in his critique of Chinese imperialist ideologies. In his short story A Madman’s Diary, the lunatics are in fact the cleverest of people who realize the dark truth about imperialist societal ideologies. Because of their realization, society silenced them by labeling them as lunatics. The head of the person is replaced with changing phases of the moon, and chains and bondage cover the person’s body.
